Sponsored by Lord Byron's daughter Ada, John Thomas studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London from the age of thirteen. In 1861 he received the title "Pencerdd Gwalia" ("Principal Musician of Wales"). In 1872 he became official harpist to Queen Victoria and retained this post under Edward VII. Thomas composed numerous solo and orchestral pieces for harp and published e.g. a collection of Welsh tunes. The miller's daughter testifies to his knowledge of the compositional technique for the harp.
