The record company "Hi-Records" did not release Al Green's track as a single, but instead passed the song to his labelmate, Syl Johnson. Johnson's recording of the song, featuring most of the same musicians as on Green's version, but with additional harmonica and a grittier vocal performance, reached #7 on the US Bilboard R&B chart in 1975. It was his most successful single.
Al Green himself stated in his 2000 autobiography "Take Me to the River" that he preferred Syl Johnson's '75 cover of the song. Johnson's version slows the rhythm down as it turns into the archetypal Memphis shuffle.
"Take Me to the River" has become Al Green's second most popular song next to "Let's Stay Together" . Not too bad for a song that wasn't even released as a single at the time.
