Description

On a brief note, this composition was generally accepted as a work of Haydn until 1965. According to an article on Wikipedia (which appears to be well sourced):

"In 1965, musicologists Alan Tyson and H.C. Robbins Landon published a finding that the entire set of six String Quartets long-admired as Haydn's Op. 3, including the Andante cantabile of No. 5 in F Major (known as Haydn's Serenade), were actually composed by Roman Hoffstetter."

Roman Hoffstetter was an avid admirer of Haydn and a quiet monk whose work remained unknown during his lifetime. Perhaps the musical world's century-long assumption that these manuscripts were previously lost early Haydn works was, for Hoffstetter, was perhaps the highest honor - to have his compositions to be regarded with such esteem that they were mistaken for those of his musical hero.

Halo Records, and its successor/sister label Ultraphonic Records, were perhaps the most prominent labels in a chain of monaural budget record lines run by Eli Oberstein during his later career. The large majority of the Halo/Ultraphonic catalog was derived from prior record lines Eli had run, but Halo/Ultraphonic Records did offer some fresh offerings, howbeit mostly mixed down to mono releases taken from the Rondo-lette Stereo line. Halo Records began around 1957, with it being replaced a couple of years later by Ultraphonic when Eli Oberstein had to "reorganize" his business operations due to financial issues.

Halo releases sported colorful jackets with printed color photographs, something that was just coming into vogue at the time. Many of the Halo Record releases used scenic photos and fine paintings to attract potential buys attention. Of all the Eli Oberstein record lines one typically encounters in the thrift stores and bargain bins of record shops, Halo records appear frequently- perhaps more than the earlier lines. This may have had something to do with the fact the earlier line only could do a two-color cover art design, and maybe incorporate a black and white photo of an artist featured.
