First movement: Adagio sostenuto (Slowly, restrainedly)
It is this movement, the most famous of the three, that gave rise to the "lunar" association. It is written in C-sharp minor and from the very first notes immerses the listener in an atmosphere of deep sadness and melancholic reflection. Continuous, hypnotic triplets in the right hand create a sense of the measured, inexorable flow of time, while the mournful, almost recitative melody in the left hand sounds like a quiet, despairing monologue. This movement lacks traditional development and is rather a free outpouring of feelings, anticipating the musical language of the Romantic era.
