He has been described by jazz critic John Fordham as a "unique composer, pianist, and educator" and was primarily known within the jazz world for most of his career.
Hill recorded nearly a dozen albums over a decade for Blue Note Records. His music incorporated a variety of styles, including post-bop, avant-garde jazz, bebop, and hard bop. He collaborated with notable musicians such as Joe Chambers, Richard Davis, Eric Dolphy, Bobby Hutcherson, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Elvin Jones, Woody Shaw, Tony Williams, and John Gilmore.
Hill's music continually evolved, and his compositions and performances were focused on the present, always exploring new ideas and meanings without being tied to the past. He is known for his dedication to innovation and creativity in jazz.
